Sherry's friend Lynn was in from Florida and along
with Sherry's mom, Helen, the girls paid a visit to Harrah's

Sherry did her best to bring Lynnie good luck

as consolation Sherry gave Lynne an Adventures T-shirt

only in New Orleans do you run into Big Chief Monk Boudreaux
of the Golden Eagles while leaving a casino

then it was off to the Circle Bar where Sherry was
greeted by her old friend Kevin Burley

Kevin and the guys in Mahayla are one of the
really cool young bands around New Orleans

Sherry & Katie agree that Mahayla is band you need to check out

also checking out the action was Johnny Sketch's Andre
Bohren
who Sherry has known since he was too young
to get into the clubs he played in at night

taking a night off from the casino, Lynn took Sherry
to dinner at the French Quarter's famous Cafe Giovanni

New Orleans food critic Tom Fitzmorris singing to his
Eat Club which was also dining at Cafe Giovanni that evening...
(none of them appear to be listening at all)

Cafe Giovanni is famous for the dishes of Chef Duke
and he was was quick to greet Sherry when he heard
she was visiting his restaurant

and every Wednesday night is Opera Night
at Cafe Giovanni...here Mario serenades Sherry

and then he quickly grabbed his chance for his debut
or maybe he just wanted to catch the basketball score

also singing that night was Fahnlohnee Harris who is also
one of
the new co-hosts on Louisiana Jukebox and she
took a liking to Sherry immediately

from Cafe Giovanni's it was off to Tipitina's with
the Houseman's Lounge & Sherman

and the girls were all out and shining as Sherry is joined
by Simone, Billy Sue, Lorie Lund & Angelina Butera

and Stephen Stills joined the band for a good part of the night

but the force of the evening was Sherry's longtime friend Ivan Neville

and then finally....it's that glorious time of the year
Jazz Fest
Sherry with old her friends Alvin & Kate who she
hadn't seen since last year. Sherry always parks right
across the street from the Gentily gate
at Alvin & Kate's house

the excitement builds when it's time for the
traditional first day lineup
outside the fairgrounds gates

this year Jazz Fest starts a day early with a First Thursday
for the first time ever, sponsored by Popeye's Chicken...
here Sherry chats with the poor kid who has to sit
in a hot chicken suit all day in the name of Fried Chicken

one of the very first people Sherry ran into was
Dave Malone of the Radiators
out early soaking up all the great music

trusting the results of our recent Jazz Fest Food Poll
Sherry started her Fest feasting with the ever popular
Crawfish Bread...and it was awesome

Bill, Jen, Kristie & Sherry all enjoyed the great weather
up front at the Louisiana Heritage Stage
(formerly known as Sprint PCS, before that Louisiana LPG,
before that Polaroid, or just good ol' stage #1)

Kenny Neal turned in a blistering set in the Blues Tent
K
Sherry and Juls enjoying the early moments of the Fest

along with great music, Jazz Fest also provides intimate
access to artists...
here Sherry's good friend Grant Morris is conducting
an interview
with Tony Haselden & Leon Medica of Louisiana's Le Roux

then Grant grabbed the guys along with Louie the Radical
and showed them the proper way to make your
Adventures debut

the very rare Gerry Raley sighting....Gerry
gave Sherry a button that says "Got Orvia?"...
Sherry isn't sure what that means but she was proud to wear it

when Sherry told Bob Barr the stories she heard
about him after the Viper Ball it caused him to gasp

the Bonerama Horns tore it up

Brooks dances with Sherry while Diana and their friend take in the sounds

another of the Jazz Fest Food Poll entries was Duke's mom's
Key Lime Tarts
& Strawberry Shortcake, so Sherry stopped on by and asked Cele if
she was Dukes mom and she cautiously replied "Maybe"...
the Key Lime Tart was killer

Sherry ran into David Kunian and Lisa as she strolled the
fairgrounds...
a big part of Jazz Fest is running into old friends on the walkway

next up was one of the top sets of the first weekend
performed by a group we call the Adventures of Sherry All-Stars
June Yamagishi (weeks # 1, 33,
39, 44, 47),
Tony Hall (weeks # 10, 33,
47),
Raymond Webber (weeks # 44, 47),
Nick Daniels (weeks # 10, 47)
Ian Neville (weeks # 1, 35,
47)
and led by Sherrys good buddy
Ivan Neville (weeks # 4, 15,
16, 19, 21,
31, 33, 35,
39, 45, 47).....
it's Ivan Neville's Dumpsta Phunk
laying down da stankiest of New Orleans funk

out in the middle of the crowd Sherry ran into
Kevin "Better Living Through Chemistry" McKinley
who Sherry hadn't seen since the M.O.M.'s Ball

Sherry and Tom Campbell catch a little shade and a whole
lotta soul while spending some time in the Blues Tent

here Sherry finds former New Orleanian John (RD) Groetsch,
one of the brothers that started the Howlin Wolf and now
a proud resident of the city of Las Vegas

Sherry's new friend Kevin from Atlanta...
Kevin gets the Adventures forwarded to him by a friend

the girls of Jazz Fest...
Sherry along with Jazz Fest perennials Patti & Larissa
and Paola who is enjoying her first day of Jazz Fest ever

back down at the Louisiana Heritage stage
Lucinda Williams made a triumphant return to New Orleans

out on the walkway in front of the grandstand
Marianne and Sherry compare notes
on the days best sights & sounds

Sherry ran into her old friend and a man
who is all over Jazz Fest Bruce "Sunpie" Barnes

Sherry was happy to see Mark up and enjoying
the Jazz Fest and Mark was definitely enjoying himself

Richard and Pam catch Sherry on the track and remind
her about the Subdudes show on Friday at Jimmy's

when you're up in the Grandstand area stop by and see
Sherry's good friend Sylvester "Hawk Mini" Francis who runs
the Backstreet Cultural Museum, an archive of New Orleans
Second Lines and Mardi Gras Indian culture

as much as gang hated to admit it....day 1 was a wrap

but that night Sherry was off to an incredible party
thrown by Chris Ryan's brother Ken at
the Dive In on Dryades...it's kind of a private hotel
with a big party room with a pool as a front room

Sherry then amazed Lynnda DeFelice and her son Aaron
with her incredible disappearing shrimp trick

Sherry with 4 of the 16 Ryan kids
Chris, Tim, Ken and Dennis (we think he's the one they call Ringo)

Chris Ryan proudly displays his new Adventures of Sherry
T-Shirt
which all them Ryan Boys was proud to receive

Sherry takes a break but the night
for our girl is still young

as it was time for Slidemania I at Tip's French Quarter...
here Camile Baudoin of the Radiators leads the charge
along with Papa Malli & The Instagators

Sherry was rockin to the show along with old friends
Missy Bowen and Todd "Obey The D" Perret

Brint Anderson, a frequent guest in the Adventures, was
next
up and jumped all over the groove Papa Malli and his guys laid down

Sherry getting some love from little Ian's daddy Sean
and checking out his beautiful poster artwork

next up on this bill of Slide Monsters...John Mooney

Sherry with the Gov, Allison & Steve Horowitz are having
such a great time they wonder if they will
need a sign to know when it is time to quit

we have a winner...and that concludes
Day 1 of Jazz Fest 2003
